Writing happens late, after the house goes still. One light, one cup of something warm, and a playlist that never changes until the book is finished. The ritual matters less than the signal it sends, which is simply that the world is open again.
Each book gets its own playlist, and each major character gets a track. Dark orchestral pieces carry the magic scenes, slower acoustic songs carry the grief, and there is always one song that belongs entirely to the romance and gets played far too many times.
Drafting days are messy and fast. Editing days are slow and quiet, usually with no music at all, because dialogue needs silence to sound honest.
When a scene refuses to work, I leave the desk and do something with my hands, usually woodburning or a diamond painting. The story keeps working in the background, and the answer almost always arrives before the piece is finished.
